MP Baijayant Panda suspended from BJD

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik has suspended Kendrapara MP Baijayant Jay Panda from Biju Janata Dal (BJD) with immediate effect for all "anti-party activities", media reports said.

Patro cited that Panda started indulging in weakening the party soon after the party disapproved his suggestion to propose his name for the chairmanship of the Lok Sabha Finance Standing Committee.

IMFA is engaged in mining, ferro alloys and electricity production.

In 2009 and 2014, Panda contested Lok Sabha elections on a BJD ticket and represented Kendrapara constituency.

"Mr. Panda's claim that he was a founder-member of the BJD is baseless", said Mr. Patro in his statement.

The party accused Panda of not campaigning for the party during the PRI (rural) elections and indulging in "anti-party activities supporting opposition candidates". There was also a huge loan running into thousands of crores owed by IMFA (previously ICCL) which was waived and this is still a subject of debate, he pointed out. Minister Patro said party supremo suspended him from primary membership of the party. It seems that the parliamentarian bore the brunt for raising voice against a non-Odia IAS officer who has been excessively interfering in political affairs of the party. He also alleged conspiracy against him while expressing grief. By doing so, Naveen has proved his helplessness.

Panda in his reaction said, "I'm shocked and very sad". "However, if he is nominated, he stated he would be able to lobby and get it", the party release said.

Earlier in May 2017, Panda was removed from the post of spokesperson of the BJD parliamentary party after he made several remarks on social media over party matters.

While on the other hand, more and more leaders of the state echoed the views of Jay Panda on excessive interference of "non-Odia" IAS Officer and CM's private secretary VK Pandian, who was even termed as the second power centre within the party.
