Suspect in fatal Call of Duty 'swatting' incident charged with manslaughter

The Kansas City Police Department received a 9-1-1 call alleging that a family was being held hostage after the father had been killed by an intruder. "All of a sudden there's a SWAT team at the door". He leaves behind two children aged 2 and 7. That officer is now on paid administrative leave.

A 25-year-old Los Angeles man has been released to Kansas authorities to face a felony allegation that he made a hoax emergency call that led to the fatal police shooting of a Wichita resident.

"Someone tried to SWAT me and got an innocent man killed, the person said on Twitter according to Rolling Stone". Barriss believed Finch's address to be that of a Call of Duty player that he was attempting to harass when another player commissioned him to do so. The account has been suspended. Finch was not armed. The address turned out to be unrelated to anyone involved with the dispute, however, and instead led police to Finch. "He has better things to do with his time".

The recent issuing of arrest warrants for a California man in connection with a fraudulent call to 911 that prompted a large police presence in southwest Calgary was likely the first encounter with the term "swatting" for many Calgarians but, for online gamers, the criminal prank calls are well-known. Just one week before the deadly Wichita call, Barriss reportedly called in a false threat at a Calgary woman's apartment.

Prosecutors allege Barriss was in Los Angeles when he called police December 28 with a fake story about a shooting and kidnapping at a home in Wichita. The Calgary resident said that she was targeted by Barriss due to her online persona.
