NFL Investigating Raiders' Possible Rooney Rule Violation After Jon Gruden Hire

The Rooney Rule states a team must interview at least one minority candidate for its open head coach or executive job.

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis was relentless in his pursuit of Jon Gruden - perhaps too relentless.

This news comes one day after the league received an investigation request from the Fritz Pollard Alliance, a diversity group that assists the NFL in the monitoring of minority hires. Oakland may look to hire Martin as its wide receivers coach, as he has a second interview with the team. "If in December, Gruden says to Davis, 'Hey, I am going to come out of the broadcast booth and I'm ready to coach again, ' that is not a violation of the Rooney Rule".

The Fritz Pollard Alliance (FPA) initially was okay with the Raiders' hiring of Gruden, but did request to the National Football League to do some further investigation on the process.

Gruden coached the Raiders from 1998 to 2001 before being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and capturing Super Bowl XXXVII. "And that's the term that we were using in our discussions and everything, are you all-in?" Davis will probably regret saying that he met with Gruden on Christmas Eve, even though the shocked reports about that meeting fail to acknowledge that there were reports before Week 17 that the Raiders were pursuing Gruden, and those weren't just lucky guesses.

Davis fired coach Jack Del Rio a week later, and the team officially hired Gruden on January 6. "And this time he didn't waver, either".

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said Tuesday he interviewed two minority candidates before Gruden's hiring was announced. Oakland appeared to fulfill the mandate by interviewing its tight ends coach, Bobby Johnson, and USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin.
