Facebook Testing Local News & Events Section in its App

Facebook is giving a good look at the configuration and testing of this engaging new attribute.

CNET reported today that the test is now live for a new section called "Today In" across six USA cities.

The "Today In" section will be powered by a machine learning software, which will help a team find local content.

It's understood this will be in addition to local news that already appears in Facebook's News Feed and on publishers' pages.

The project is a part of the company's Journalism Project initiative, which was launched at the time of presidential elections in 2016, because it was facing inspection for fake news stories being published on the platform before the 2016 election.

Recently, social media has been heavily criticized for being a real catalyst for the way "fake news" spreads. Why? Nevertheless, Facebook's new Journalism Project initiative and the new section does away with the pointing fingers.

As reported by Recode, the feature combines events, announcements, and local news items specific to a particular city.

But, the question that cuts through is will this section benefit the local publishers, or not?

One will be able to see news in the "Today In" tab by clicking on the ☰ button on the bottom right corner of the app. The users will get to go through local news on their go.

The social network said Thursday that it's overhauling the news feed prioritize posts from family and friends, as opposed to ones from brands and publishers.

There's no word yet on when the feature will roll out to all USA cities.
