13 dead, several injured in southern California mudslides and heavy rain

Devastating mudslides have killed at least 13 people in California, with local officials likening the scene to a "World War One battlefield".

But the wooded hillsides that once gave their estates a sense of seclusion were largely denuded by last year's historic wildfires, setting the stage for the massive slides that slammed into homes, turned highways into raging rivers and shredded cars into almost unrecognizable tangles of metal after heavy Tuesday rains.

At least two dozen people were unaccounted for and authorities have rescued at least 50 people in the Montecito area, the report said.

"We are still very much in active search and rescue mode", Elms said in a phone interview.

A winter weather advisory is in place for mountain areas, where officials warned motorists to prepare for hard travel conditions, including gusty winds, low visibility and snow-covered roads.

"That's a fear, Elms said".

A massive operation is also under way to rescue 300 people who are stranded in a canyon, and helicopters borrowed from the USA coast guard are being used to airlift them out. Meanwhile, AS WE SPEAK, her Montecito home's a staging ground for helicopter rescues.

This follows last month's wildfires in Southern California, which were intensified by the Santa Ana winds.

Some undamaged businesses closed as they lacked water, gas and other supplies to operate.

Eliason said the extent of the damage has yet to be surveyed, and crews are working to clear roads.

He also referenced Oprah's home nearby in another post and recent speculation she may run for president in 2020 after her speech at the Golden Globe Awards. And in the Sun Valley area crews were working to remove a Los Angeles Police Department patrol vehicle that became stuck in mud along a section of La Tuna Canyon Road south of the Foothill Freeway.

Already, the incident is deadlier than the 2005 California mudslide - which took place only 20 miles from Tuesday's disaster.

The mudslides are the result of a powerful rainstorm that hit state's southern region on Monday, sending mud and left-over debris down the hillsides that were burned by the Thomas Fire.
