Ibuprofen May Affect Men's Sexual Health, Study Finds

Scientists analyzed the hormones and blood of a group of 31 healthy white men between 18 and 35 years old over the course of six weeks. A new study says the well-known painkiller could cause fertility issues in males. It didn't take long - just two weeks - for the drug to disrupt the hormonal balance and rate of testosterone production of these men.

The authors concluded that "we report a univocal depression of important aspects of testicular function, including testosterone production, after use of over-the-counter ibuprofen".

Infertility in men can be caused by a variety of factors including trauma, genetic and hormonal disorders, age, weight, smoking, drug and alcohol use, and environmental toxins. This indicates that they had developed a condition called "compensated hypogonadism", which happens when testosterone production is reduced, but the body is able to compensate by increasing LH levels, the researchers said. That works out to three ibuprofen tablets per day if you're taking a typical 200mg/tablet product.

As it relieves pain, ibuprofen may also diminish male fertility, according to a small but compelling new study.

Previous research by the team, which focused on pregnant women, had found that the use of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen during pregnancy affected the testicles of male babies.

However, in recent years, ibuprofen in particular has been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, meaning we should be more cautious when taking anti-inflammatory drugs.

Those in the ibuprofen group were given two doses of ibuprofen a day.

"The safety and efficacy of active ingredients in these products has been well documented and supported by decades of scientific study and real-world use", said Mike Tringale, a spokesman for the association, according to Fox News.

Fortunately, the condition went away in the volunteers when they stopped taking the medication.

HollywoodLifers, did you know the negative effects of ibuprofen?

"The effects were very mild even after six weeks of regular consumption of ibuprofen, which is longer than is usually recommended in practice, so this data should not concern men who occasionally take ibuprofen for pain relief", Ali Abbara, Imperial College London's senior clinical lecturer in endocrinology, told Forbes. The condition, generally associated with elderly men and linked to reproductive and physical disorders, including infertility, results in the body having higher levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) than testosterone.
