Donald Trump Plans to Attend World Davos Economic Forum

President Trump is planning the first foreign trip of his second year in office: A visit to the high-profile economic forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The White House didn't immediately say which USA officials would be traveling with Mr. Trump.

President Trump will attend the World Economic Forum, a gathering of leaders, bankers and economists in Switzerland later this month, the White House says.

Mr. Trump won the 2016 election in part by attacking elites in the United States and promising to "drain the swamp" in Washington of lobbyists, corporate influence and members of the establishment - the very description of those who regularly attend the Davos forum.

In a separate statement, Klaus Schwab, the founder of the forum, said Trump would offer a "direct perspective" on the U.S.'s priorities and that the president would be accompanied by key Cabinet ministers and US lawmakers. Given its elitist reputation, most presidents have not attended and Trump skipped it a year ago; his decision to go may reflect the waning influence of anti-globalists around him, notably fired chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon. He is threatening to end the Nafta free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, issue trade sanctions against China and scrap the Iran nuclear deal.

Clinton first attended the event in 2000, the forum's 30th anniversary. Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Barack Obama never attended the meeting.

The theme of this year's Davos conference is to examine the causes of and solutions for political, economic and social fractures in society, Reuters writes.
