Senate Bill to Reverse Net Neutrality Repeal to Get Floor Vote

Republicans now hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, meaning two GOP Senators would need to go against the party for the vote to pass.

The Internet Association, comprised of Facebook, Google, Amazon, Twitter, Netflix and other large tech firms, said on january 5 that it plans to join the looming legal fight against the Federal Communications Commission over its repeal of so-called net neutrality rules, according to the New York Times.

In California, a bill was introduced earlier this week to regulate internet service providers as public utilities and to block them from using utility poles unless they agreed to comply with the net neutrality rules.

"Millions of people from across the political spectrum fought hard to win the Title II net neutrality protections that the FCC just callously slashed at the behest of telecom lobbyists", Greer said in a statement.

Net neutrality is the principle that all online traffic should be treated equally.

Markey said during a press conference call last month that "those who don't support a free and open internet will feel the power of the consumer". Markey's (D-Mass.) bill on Twitter. Under the Congressional Review Act, Congress can overrule any regulation issued by a government agency with a simple majority. If passed, the bill would overturn the FCC's rollback of net neutrality rules under the Congressional Review Act - the same legislative policy Republicans used to roll back Obama-era regulations previous year. A tie vote would likely mean the deciding vote would be cast by VP Mike Pence, dooming the resolution.

Still, Free Press and others are pushing forward, noting that the net neutrality rules are widely popular. None of them are Republicans. By forcing a floor vote on the resolution to nullify the repeal, supporters of net neutrality could make Republican legislators go on record about whether they support net neutrality or not, something that could be used as a campaign issue in this fall's mid-term elections. A separate poll conducted this year found that 60% of registered voters (61% of Democrats and 59% of Republicans) support net neutrality rules. Once the new rule is published in the federal register and the FCC submits a report to the House and Senate, Congress has a limited period of time to act. Adding that it would continue to push for legislation to restore "strong, enforceable net neutrality protections through a legislative solution".
