National Football League officials to review if Panthers followed concussion protocol

Newton left for one play after Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata's chest struck Newton's head with about nine minutes left.

Newton was slow to get up and collapsed on his way back to the sideline.

He was examined by medical personnel and was cleared to reenter the game. The league and players' union conducted probes previous year after Newton took a hard hit to the head late in the season opener at Denver but did not come out of the game. The Saints won the game, 31-26, sacking Newton on the game's final play.

'My helmet had came down low enough over my eyelid and it got pressed by the player's stomach I believe.

Later, coach Ron Rivera claimed that Newton was "actually poked in the eye" and only taken to the tent as a precaution.

The organisation stipulates that any player suspected of having concussion must be evaluated in the dressing room. A sideline concussion evaluation is not considered sufficient under those circumstances. Changes to the league's protocol - including the addition of a centralized unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant at the NFL office to monitor games - were spurred by the Savage hit.

The NFL's new concussion protocol, implemented on December 11, included the notice that the league will 'require a locker room concussion evaluation for all players demonstrating gross or sustained vertical instability (e.g., stumbling or falling to the ground when trying to stand)'.

This is not the first time the Panthers' handling of Newton has come under scrutiny.

According to Nowinski, it does not matter whether Newton was told to drop to a knee.

But on Twitter, viewers shared memes blasting the Panthers for not following the concussion protocol. "But again, I'm not the doctor", Rivera said. "Apparently, supposedly, allegedly there's guys somewhere in the sky boxes that are watching that".

Jordan said the hit that Newton absorbed was significant. He said after the game the issue was with his eye, not his head.

"Did you see the hit?"

When a reported noted that Jordan's sauce comment was a callback to Newton's joke, Jordan said, "Petty, right?" He was down. He's a hell of a competitor.

"I don't think so. We romped him good". He had the typical Cam Newton face on after a sack.
