Golden Globes 2018: Oprah Winfrey was 'nervous' about her speech!

Jan 09, 2018, 00:43

"For the men in the room, this will be the first time in three months where it won't be terrifying to hear your name read out loud".

At the start of the Golden Globes on Sunday, host Seth Meyers playfully encouraged Winfrey to run against Trump.

Mayers referenced in his opening monologue comments he had made about current USA president Donald Trump during the 2011 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.

"So I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon", she said.

McDormand: "Trust me, the women in this room tonight are not here for the food". You do not have what it takes.

Some of Hollywood's biggest stars appear to be lining up to support an Oprah Winfrey presidential bid after the mogul's rousing Golden Globes acceptance speech Sunday night.

Winfrey articulated a thread about female empowerment that stretched out throughout the night.

Even if he didn't, the Grand Party of the American Left wouldn't need a special-counsel investigation to learn how much it would a benefit from having a charming, worldly, sophisticated, traveled, extremely successful, super-smart black woman as its standard bearer. Eighteen years later, he received the Cecil B DeMille award at the 1982 Golden Globes. Michelle Williams was joined, for instance, by Tarana Burke, who began using the phrase "Me Too" years ago in her advocacy for women of color who'd been sexually abused.

On almost every lapel and jacket cuff there was a button honouring the #TimesUp movement, founded by women in Hollywood to tackle workplace sexual harassment and provide legal aid to poor and immigrant women facing harassment in less glamorous and visible industries. Winfrey - who commanded a viewership of tens of millions of loyal women - for the first time publicly put her formidable stamp of approval on a candidate.

We all know what great predictors polls are. They knew how to work the political system, and they also knew how to sell. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they're in academia, engineering, medicine, and science.

Meyers suggested Christopher Plummer, who'd replaced Spacey as John Paul Getty in All the Money in the World, might do the same for House of Cards: "I hope he can do a Southern accent, because Kevin Spacey sure couldn't". "They're our athletes in the Olympics and they're our soldiers in the military".

She dedicated her win to her castmates, daughters and mother, saying: "Wow, the power of women".

Janney, who won for her role in "I, Tonya", said hearing Winfrey's speech made her cry and gave her "chills".

"It was a culture of silencing, and that was normalised".

Missed the ceremony? Fear not, as we have summed all the major talking points below, ranging from Natalie Portman's quick dig at the all-male director nominees to Oprah's magnificent speech. It was a series about a group of women realizing they're far more powerful as a group than they are as rivals.

That night, the Los Angeles Times told Winfrey that "the internet is saying Oprah for president in 2020".

Other winners included The Marvelous Mrs Maisel for best TV comedy and The Handmaid's Tale for best TV drama. At the Globes, presenters and honorees seemed to have a certain caution when it came to biting political comment, that a quip at the latest Trump tweet or "Fire and Fury" would seem trivial or tone deaf compared to the emerging #MeToo movement. She alternately smiled mid-morning sunshine and frowned serious detention-period lecture-time in delivering a political speech created to send an exciting jolt of electricity up the leg of every liberal in America.
