Stockholm station blast: Man dies in 'hand grenade' explosion

Two people are reported injured, one seriously, in a blast outside the entrance to a metro station in a southern Stockholm suburb, .

Police spokesman Sven-Erik Olsson said witnesses saw the man, in his 60s, pick up an object off the ground "which promptly exploded". A woman sustained minor injuries to her legs and face.

The Expressen and Aftonbladet newspapers said the device was a hand grenade, but that has not been confirmed.

Police checked in and around the subway station after the blast to make sure there were no other explosive devices.

Originally investigated as a murder, police now do not believe the couple was targeted.

"Someone has used some type of explosive material", Lars-Ake Stevelind, a rescue official, told Swedish television station SVT.

"It is too early to say". They added that there were no indications that the incident was related to terror.

According to a Swedish police report published previous year, Sweden is the European country where criminal gangs use the most grenades, often from stocks from the former Yugoslavia.
