Steve Bannon expresses regret over comments in West Wing tell-all

"You can be condescending", Miller shot back.

As Tapper tried to move on to specific questions, like the president's recent comments about Steve Bannon, Miller interrupted to praise Trump for everything that he accomplished in the 2016 election.

"There's one viewer you care about right now, and you're being obsequious, you're being a factotum in order to please him", Tapper said, concluding the interview as Miller struggled to get a word in.

During an interview with Stephen Miller on Sunday morning, CNN's Jake Tapper told Donald Trump's adviser that he was wasting his viewers' time and abruptly ended the segment while Miller was still talking. "Now I have to put up with a Fake Book, written by a totally discredited author", he tweeted.

Miller also spent a huge chunk of the interview blasting CNN and claiming that the network could not be relied upon because its coverage is often critical of Trump.

Miller was referring to former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon, who is quoted in Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" as calling a meeting between Donald Trump Jr.

In his statement to Axios, Bannon said his "support is also unwavering for the president and his agenda", and that he remains "ready to stand in the breech for this president's efforts to make America great again".

The interview turned tense as Miller began repeatedly slamming CNN's political coverage and the media instead of directly answering host Jake Tapper's questions.

Mr Wolff says his book is based on more than 200 interviews with the President and his senior staff over an 18-month period. He maintained that Bannon had little to do with Trump's political success, offering twice an authoritarian-tinged anecdote about the president's ability to dictate a speech on the fly.

Tapper grew exhausted of Miller repeating pro-Trump and anti-Bannon talking points and called the aide's constant interruptions "hysterical, ' as he cut the interview short by announcing, 'I think I've wasted enough of my viewers" time'.

After excerpts from the book leaked early last week, the White House decried it as pure "fiction", but the president reserved his fiercest anger for Bannon, who was pushed from the White House in August but - over the objection of many aides - remained in Trump's orbit, with the two men speaking by phone occasionally. He urged his followers to "watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!" He then added, "I think I've wasted enough of my viewers' time" before cutting off the interview.

"Because it's my show, and I don't want to do that", Tapper replied.

Asked about Trump's mental state, Miller said flatly that "no one questions the stability of the president". "If they were stronger, hopefully, you would not have something like that happen where you can say whatever comes to your head".
