Mavericks coach destroys ESPN 'disgrace' over LaVar Ball

Jan 08, 2018, 01:54

Speaking from a luxury resort in Lithuania, where his two youngest sons are preparing to make their professional debuts with Prienu Vytautas, the elder Ball made his comments to an ESPN reporter embedded with the family after the Lakers lost 108-94 to Charlotte on Friday night.

In a move that's become entirely predictable, LaVar Ball took another shot at the Los Angeles Lakers, who are now mired in a nine-game losing streak.

This comes despite ESPN's December reports that LaVar was asked by the Lakers front office to tone down his criticisms of the head coach.

Walton said Sunday that he was "fine" with LaVar's comments, on one condition. "I know how to coach him".

"I'll play for anybody", Ball responded to the yes or no question with half a smile, followed by a head nod in self approval at his response.

Hornacek gave his two cents on Ball's remarks.

"It doesn't bother me", Walton said standing just off the court at Staples Center. "My only concern with any of it is for Zo", Walton said, brushing off the comments.

Had he lost the locker room?

Carlisle said Walton has the support of the association.

"I'll play for anybody", Ball said. It's a hard task and if you don't believe it just ask me ... "I think our players are playing very hard".

"I'm fine with it".

The rough stretch Walton is referring to was a nightmarish end to December featuring games against the best teams in the National Basketball Association without break. To Ball's point, even Walton has confirmed frustrating Julius Randle with his rotations, but the lack of high-fives may be more than just a matter of Walton's coaching acumen.

Since starting the year positively; going 8-10 through their first 18 games, the Lakers have since struggled, and now sit in the last spot in the West with a record of 11-27. "I've said all along there's always parents, and parents are going to get mad at things, that's what they do". "You can't give my son the best player in the league, and don't expect them not to win".

In response to Ball's comments, Walton told reporters that he did not feel that his job was in jeopardy. "They're 100% behind and supporting what we're doing".

Asked if he disagrees with the idea that he's lost the locker room, Walton responded, "I would disagree with that, yes".
