Haley's Iran Session at UN Turns Into Defense of Nuclear Deal

US Ambassador Nikki Haley said "Iran is now on notice: the world will be watching what you do", during an emergency meeting of UN Security Council on mass anti-government protests in Iran. "The US stands unapologetically with those who seek freedom for themselves and prosperity for their families".

Russia, a close ally of Iran's, agreed.

Russian Federation challenged right at the outset the jurisdiction of the UNSC over a situation that it called a strictly domestic affair of Iran that would be best left for the Iranian authorities to deal with.

Briefing the Security Council, Taye-Brook Zerihoun, Assistant UN Secretary-General for Political Affairs, said the demonstrations taking place in Iran were a fundamental expression of human rights, and a powerful exhibition of fearless people who were so fed up with their oppressive regime that they were willing to risk their lives in protest.

Iran is not a member of the Security Council but its ambassador, Gholamali Khoshroo, was invited to participate. "Let Iran deal with its own problems".

British Ambassador to the UN, Matthew Rycroft, refuted the Iranian allegations and said that no one is forcing Iran onto their agenda.

Under its charter, the United Nations empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to global friction". Envoys from several other countries, from China to newcomer Equatorial Guinea, expressed reservations about whether the council was the right forum for the issue.

US faces criticism at Security Council meeting on Iran protests

University students attend an anti-government protest inside Tehran University as nationwide demonstrations shake Iran.

Hundreds of people took to the streets of several European cities, Canada and the USA expressing solidarity with the Iranian uprising and calling for the Khamenei regime to step down.

Britain and France reiterated that Iran must respect the rights of protesters, but French Ambassador Francois Delattre said the "events of the past days do not constitute a threat to peace and global security".

Khoshroo said Iran has "hard evidence" that violence is being directed from overseas, and went on to describe recent instances in which foreign citizens have incited violence in Iran.

As the Iranian protests continue into its eighth day, and the regime carries out its violent crackdown, the world is indeed watching. The CIA declined to comment.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif wrote on his Twitter account that the meeting was "another foreign policy blunder for the Trump administration". She said the demonstrations were a "spontaneous expression of fundamental human rights" against an "oppressive government" that prioritizes militias and terror groups overseas over its own people. Nonetheless, since Trump won the 2016 presidential election, scores of former United States officials have sought to convince him to open up discussions between his administration and the MEK.
