2 more Kmarts in MI to close by early April

After April, Sears will still operate traditional stores at the Concord and Dover malls while keeping its "Hometown Stores" in Seaford and Middletown and its appliance outlet store in Newark.

She says those new stores could open as quickly as this fall.

The majority of jobs lost to the closures are part-time positions, according to Sears Holdings.

Thirty-nine Sears locations will also close.

Bot stores are expected to close in early April. Liquidation sales will begin as early as January 12 at these closing stores. The upcoming round of closures will leave it with fewer than 940 stores, down from 3,510 six years ago.

Sears Holdings said Thursday it is closing 39 Sears locations and 64 Kmart stores in addition to the dozens of closures it announced previous year.

In late 1989, Sears moved from that location to be one of the original anchors in the then-new Gateway Mall.

In July 2015, Sears Holdings created New York-based Seritage Growth Properties, an independent real estate investment trust (REIT), to better manage its remaining assets and to take on the role of a landlord.

There are no Minnesota stores in this round of closures, though two Sears locations in Wisconsin are affected, in Green Bay and Brookfield.

Kmarts in Richmond and Greenville near Grand Rapids are in the list of 64 Kmart and 39 Sears locations that were deemed unprofitable.

Most retailers have yet to report full fourth-quarter results, but Macy's said sales at stores open at least a year were up 1 percent in November and December compared with the prior year.
