Sean McDonough emotional after Gruden's last ESPN game

"We congratulate you as you head back to the sideline with the Raiders".

For what it's worth, no coach has won a Super Bowl with multiple teams. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has made no formal announcement.

Sean McDonough was effusive in his praise of Jon Gruden, whom he says will be missed greatly as Gruden departs to coach the Oakland Raiders.

The Oakland Raiders never really recovered from the decision to trade Jon Gruden to Tampa Bay 16 years ago.

Owner Mark Davis hopes that will all change now that he has finally lured Gruden back for a second stint as the team's coach. Gruden will be formally introduced at a news conference Tuesday. From 1998-2001, Gruden was head coach of the Oakland Raiders compiling a record of 38-28 with two playoff appearances that ended in the AFC Wild Card rounds to the Baltimore Ravens. Gibbs stepped away following the 1992 season with three Super Bowl titles in his career. The defense struggled mightily before a late-season switch from fired coordinator Ken Norton Jr.to play-caller John Pagano.

The Raiders fell to 6-10 in 2017 after going 12-4 and earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2002 in 2016.

Gruden will be announced this week as the next coach of the Oakland Raiders, and thus was working his last game for ESPN; McDonough made clear that Gruden was liked and respected not just by his broadcast partner, but by everyone involved with ESPN's National Football League production. Overall, Gruden is 95-81 in 11 seasons. He is the second-youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl in National Football League history, winning a ring at age 39 in his first season with Tampa Bay.
