A WestJet flight from Cancun with 174 people onboard had just arrived in Toronto and was waiting to proceed to its gate when it was hit by an empty Sunwing airliner being towed by the airline's ground service, CBC News reports.
Two commercial planes collided on the ground Friday night at Toronto Pearson International Airport, sparking a small fire and prompting the evacuation of dozens of passengers, the city's airport authority said.
Canada's transportation safety board said it would be investigating the incident.
The Sunwing aircraft was not carrying any passengers or crew on board at the time the collision occurred, and the incident took place when the plane was "under tow", Sunwing said in a statement on its official Twitter page.
Video footage shows passengers exiting on an emergency slide as flames rose from the tail of the other airplane.
But passengers have offered accounts of confusion aboard the plane and allegations that procedures were not clearly communicated.
