HP recalls battery packs due to burn, fire hazards

Canada is announcing the recall of lithium-ion batteries available with HP laptops and portable workstations as they may overheat, posing a risk of burns and fire.

HP has received eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting, or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500 with one report of a minor injury involving a first degree burn to the hand.

The voluntary safety recall was initiated this month, with HP offering replacements for affected units.

Is your laptop among those affected by the recall?

HP has issued a battery recall notice for a number of its laptops and mobile workstations sold over the last two years due to concerns that the battery inside these machines could be risky and a fire hazard.

The company will send those impacted by the fault a free battery replacement, as well as help organise an appointment to actually get it replaced.

The computer maker said the troublesome batteries were sold with the following products over the last two years: Envy, HP11, HP Pavilion, HP ProBook, HP Studio G3 and ZBook models.

The recall affects about 50,000 machines sold in the USA, in addition to about 2,600 in Canada. You can download a tool to verify if your battery is susceptible to the issue here.
