At least 75 vehicles involved in crash on Thruway near Buffalo

Police were forced to close both Eastbound lanes of the Thruway and divert traffic.

Snow caused a massive crash involving dozens of vehicles on a NY highway on Tuesday afternoon.

At least one person was killed and another was seriously injured.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted that the motorist was transported to the hospital.

Snow and icy conditions closed the eastbound I-90 Thruway between exits 50 and 49, the New York State Thruway Authority said. All eastbound traffic must get off at Exit 50.

Poloncarz told WIVB-TV that seven volunteer fire departments were at the scene, as well as the Erie County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and the Erie County Department of Health.

Roughly 75 vehicles were piled up between the Depew and Pembroke exits. All traffic must exit at 48A.

At least two possible injuries were reported by the New York Daily News, though it's still unclear exactly what caused the crash.

A travel advisory has been issued for northern Erie County, including all of Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Lancaster, Alden, and areas north to the Erie/Niagara County line.
