Apple will replace your iPhone battery for $29 regardless of test results

Following last week's unexpected announcement of a discounted $29 iPhone battery replacement program for users with iPhone performance problems, Apple has made a last-minute change. (NASDAQ:AAPL) news today is its battery replacement plan.

The company had previously mentioned the threshold of "anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced", which seemed to apply to the in-house diagnostic tests it was running on handsets, recommending a replacement once the battery drops below 80-percent its initial capacity.

The company is already facing lawsuits from three plaintiffs in the USA who have claimed that Apple failed to inform them about the processor throttling and that such enforced slowdowns were unethical and deceptive - an attempt to force people into upgrading. This offer is available for the iPhone 6, 6s and 7.

When Apple announced it would replace those batteries for just $29 each, some were still anxious that their phones might not qualify for the fix. The goal of the iPhone SE is to draw in customers that still want an Apple product, but don't want to spend as much money on its more powerful smartphones.

"We maintain that 2017 fourth-quarter iPhone X volumes were at 30 to 35 million and we are very skeptical that volumes will increase in the first quarter of 2018", CLSA analyst Nicolas Baratte wrote in an note Tuesday. Apple has confirmed that its "power management" system will deactivate if the iPhone recognizes that a new, full-power battery has been installed.

Batteries typically decline in power output over time, reducing the amount of power they are able to provide to the device. This new patent describes how the tech company may handle wireless charging for devices over a long distance.
