Packers GM Thompson to take on new role

In addition to seeking a new defensive coordinator, the Packers are in search for a new general manager.

Green Bay will start the hiring process to replace Thompson as general manager, according to Rapoport.

But Thompson has hit on a few picks over the past couple of years, including sophomore DL Kenny Clark and Dean Lowry and ILB Blake Martinez, all of whom enjoyed strong individual seasons and should help with the attractiveness of the Packers' first defensive-coordinator vacancy in almost a decade.

A trip to the dentist, a colonoscopy or having your scheduled flight delayed by six hours are all far more pleasurable than having to watch the Packers trudge their way through games lately with a ultra-conservative pop-gun attack and a far-from-impenetrable defense softer than a neglected banana that has since changed colors.

If Murphy wants someone with previous National Football League experience as a general manager, he could pursue Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider or Oakland Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie, both of whom spent much of their National Football League careers in the Packers' front office.

Murphy has several in-house candidates to consider as Thompson's replacement. The move comes after Sunday's 35-11 loss to Detroit in the season finale to drop the Packers to 7-9, their first losing season since 2008. However, Thompson's shift in power is by far the most impactful.

The Packers finished the 2017 season 26th in scoring defense (24.0) and 22nd in yards allowed (348.9).

Another key decision Thompson would make early in his tenure came even before he hired McCarthy to serve as the team's head coach in 2006.

This news comes on the heels of reports that long-time defensive coordinator Dom Capers has also been let go, along with a few of his assistants: linebackers coach Scott McCurley and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac.
