Presidency Reacts To Controversy Over Buhari's Board Appointments
Jan 01, 2018, 00:51
Ex-aviation minister, Chief Olufemi Fani Kayode has attacked President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing a late Senator as the chairman of the Nigerian Press Council.
In his New Year message, which was signed by his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, Ajimobi admitted that the country experienced social and economic challenges in 2017, stressing however that the various programmes and policies of the Federal Government would bring the needed succour to the people in 2018.
The Presidency maintained that the appearance of dead persons names was a mistake, which would be corrected. "The President asked all state chapters of the APC to forward 50 names for appointments to the SGF through the national headquarters of the party", Shehu said.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has assured Nigerians of better days in 2018, following the challenges the people faced in the outgoing year.
He added that, having recovered fully, Buhari only instructed the new SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha, to release the list.
He said: "This list is a historical list".
"However, complaint arose from some Governors who felt they were not carried along in the process".
The statement read in part, "Withdrawing the appointments and directing and allowing the civil service systems to follow due process to reappoint chairpersons and members to the boards of these agencies and parastatals would bring the government's practices and operations into conformity with Nigeria's global anticorruption obligations, particularly the UN Convention against Corruption".
"The president's trips for medical attention slowed down completion of the process", he said, until when Mr Buhari made a decision to revisit the matter recently.
"So, the President constituted a new panel chaired by the Vice President. They were asked to go and review the list", he explained.
Efforts to get the spokesman of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Mohammed Nakorji, to comment on the development were not successful.
A source told Daily Trust on Sunday that the controversial list contains over 60 percent of the initial nominations by the Babachir Lawal-led committee despite protest of some governors and party bigwigs.
