Jodie Whittaker's Doctor Who: Watch the Doctor's first female regeneration

Jodie Whittaker, who starred in 24 episodes of Broadchurch, will take over for Capaldi at the tale end of the episode when The Doctor regenerates.

The actress made an impressive debut in the 2006 feature Venus opposite Peter O'Toole and went on to star in the St Trinians movies and Joe Cornish's Attack the Block (also starring Star Wars' John Boyega). Comedy Mrs Brown's Boys was the top show on Christmas Day with an average audience of 6.8M, followed by Strictly Come Dancing's Christmas special, Call the Midwife, Eastenders, The Queen's Christmas Broadcast and Doctor Who.

But how will Whittaker be introduced to the world as the Thirteenth Doctor?

Whittaker's Doctor didn't get a gentle start to her era, being flung from the Tardis out over the city of London.

The good news is that it's very easy to watch Doctor Who in the UK.

"The final chapter of the Twelfth Doctor's journey sees the Time Lord team up with the first ever Doctor and a returning Bill Potts for one last adventure."

The emotional instalment co-starred David Bradley as the original Doctor, who re-enacted scenes from a 1966 episode of the long running sci-fi series.

Moffat and Capaldi's exit marks a significant change for the BBC show, with Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall taking on the role of showrunner.

And a - ahem - amusing few thought this was the flawless opportunity to spout some oh-so original "women driver" jokes about the new Doctor's slight mishap. The special will be titled "Twice Upon a Time".

Doctor Who: Twice Upon A Time airs on BBC AMERICA on Dec 25, 2017.
