World Health Organization May Recognize "Gaming Disorder" in 2018

Instances of addiction to playing video games are on the rise to such a degree that the World Health Organization is adding "gaming disorder" to its global classification of diseases in 2018. In its Beta draft of International Classification of Diseases for 2018, entry 6D11, or 'gaming disorder,' is attracting plenty of attention.
"Disorders due to addictive behaviors are recognizable and clinically significant syndromes associated with distress or interference with personal functions that develop as a result of repetitive rewarding behaviors other than the use of dependence-producing substances", the gaming-relevant section states.
The disorder is characterized by persistent video game playing that takes precedence over other life interests and activities.
It's important to note that this isn't a final draft and it still needs to be approved by World Health Organization, but if gaming addiction does become a recognized disorder, it could have far-reaching implications.
We argue that rather than stigmatizing gaming per se, the role of scientists and practitioners is to establish a clear-cut distinction between someone who may use games excessively but non-problematically and someone who is experiencing significant impairment in their daily lives as a outcome of their excessive gaming. That said, "Internet Gaming Disorder" was also proposed for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in 2013, but was ultimately slated for further study because of a lack of evidence supporting its inclusion. "The gaming behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe".
