Roy Moore files last-minute lawsuit challenging Alabama result

Merrill's office received roughly 120 complaints of voter fraud, mostly from sources outside Alabama, and roughly 70% had already been investigated and adjudicated. Jones said he will be an "independent voice" in the Senate and will strive for "common ground with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle".

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill is pictured shortly after certification of the special election.

Roy Moore filed an election complaint on Wednesday, alleging potential voter fraud in Alabama's special election and urged a delay in certifying the results.

Jones defeated Moore by 21,924 votes.

Moore, a Republican, is an anti-LGBT, religious right extremist who was twice removed as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court - the first time for refusing to take down a Ten Commandments monument from the state courthouse, the second time for trying to block marriage equality in the state.

Alabama officially certified Doug Jones as the victor of the state's recent U.S. Senate special election Thursday, allowing the Democrat to soon take his seat on Capitol Hill. About 12:30 p.m. Central time today, a judge denied Moore's request to halt certification, reports AL.com, a site for several Alabama newspapers.

The allegations, first reported by the Post, may have been what cost Moore the election.

Jones defeated Moore on December 12 by 21,924 votes in a stunning victory in a traditionally red state, becoming the first Alabama Democrat elected to the Senate victory in a quarter-century.

Sam Coleman, a spokesman for Jones's campaign, was not impressed by Moore's complaint.

It also includes Moore's own recounting of a polygraph test that he claimed proves he didn't know or have relations with three of his nine accusers.

Gloria Allred, an attorney representing Beverly Nelson Young, who had alleged Moore sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager, said Moore's attempts to discredit the victims would not work.

Mr Merrill said he has so far not found evidence of voter fraud, but that his office will investigate any complaint that Mr Moore submits. He said Moore's complaint seemed to boil down to the belief that he should have won based on exit polling and that the high turnout, including by African-American voters, must indicate fraud.

Mr Merrill told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he had no intention of delaying the canvassing board meeting and certification of the victor.

Moore appeared to be the favorite in the contest to fill the Senate seat held by Jeff Sessions, who is now Trump's attorney general.

Moore repeatedly denied the allegations made against him.
