Dr. Phil Guests Allege Producers Enabled Drug and Alcohol Use Before Tapings

When Survivor victor Todd Herzog appeared on Dr. Phil in 2013, he was reportedly so intoxicated that he slurred his words and needed help from two people just to make it to his seat.
Herzog accuses Dr. Phil of using his condition to play up the show's dramatic effects, with McGraw telling his audience during the interview that he had never spoken with another guest who appeared to be closer to death than Herzog was during the taping. But a new report from STAT and the Boston Globe takes those charges a cut deeper, alleging that America's prevailing TV psychiatrist has actually provided drugs and alcohol to guests struggling with addiction.
"I show up to the studios and I'm sober", Herzog told STAT and the Globe.
Then, not long before filming, he found a bottle of vodka that had been left in his dressing room, Herzog claimed. He drank all of it.
After that, Herzog said someone gave him a Xanax to "calm his nerves".
Dr. Phil and his staff have been accused of giving drugs and alcohol to addicts before appearing on his show in efforts to boost ratings. "You know, that's horrifying".
"What would have happened if I had died there?"
"I'm grateful in a lot of ways for the show", Herzog admitted.
The story added: "Guests have been left without medical help as they face withdrawal from drugs, a STAT/Boston Globe investigation has found, and one person said she was directed by a show staff member to an open-air drug market to find heroin for her detoxing niece".
"They pull me into my dressing room and there was two liters of vodka and, like, some Red Bulls and orange juice... at some point somebody gave me a Xanax". And Marianne Smith claims a Dr. Phil producer helped her niece procure heroin. The King-Parrishes assumed there would be medical supervision, but when they flew to Los Angeles to tape the show, Kaitlin went into withdrawal.
"They told us where to go, Skid Row", Smith said. If you get replaced by a soap opera, I'm totally going to submit a writing packet, so that's what I'm hoping for here.
Martin Greenberg, a psychologist who also serves as the production's director of professional affairs, told the publications that guests have never been provided with alcohol and have never been told where they can find drugs.
"Addicts are notorious for lying, deflecting and trivialising", he said. Another guest said they were filmed while looking for a dealer. "The only change is they are one step closer to getting help, typically help they could not have even come close to affording".
