Claire's pulls several makeup products from shelves after asbestos scare

Barrington mom Kristie Warner was concerned about the glittery makeup kit she bought for her 6-year-old daughter at the Providence Place Mall, so she shipped a sample to an independent lab in North Carolina, WJAR reported.

Claire's, a makeup and jewelry retailer geared toward preteens, has recalled several products following a potential asbestos scare. "I ended up sitting on the ground, just trying to wrap my head around how something like that could end up in our home", Kristi said of the aftermath.

According to the National Cancer Institute, exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a rare type of cancer.

"In the work that we do, we've come across contaminated cosmetics, but you just assume that a children's product would be safe", she said.

Following her request, additional products from Claire's in nine different states were then tested, Time reports, and each product was revealed to contain tremolite asbestos. According to the FDA the kit, tested positive for the toxic substance.

Claire's has issued a statement saying, "As a result of today's inquiry from WJAR, we have taken the precautionary measure of pulling the items in question from sale, and will be conducting an immediate investigation into the alleged issues".

Claire's - which has over 3,000 stores in 36 countries - has released a list of nine products including eye shadows, blushes, and compact powders that have been pulled from its shelves as part of the asbestos case.

"We have retained an independent laboratory to test the cited products in order to determine whether the recent news reports are accurate", Claire's said Thursday.
