More Pregnant Mothers in California Are Using Pot

Researchers observed a sample of pregnant women in California and saw a 3-percent increase in use form 2009 through 2016.

More and more expectant mothers are using marijuana in states where it is legal, the results of a new study of California women suggests.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug during pregnancy, and its use is increasing.

Marijuana use among pregnant mothers in California rose from 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent from 2009-2016.

The publication said, however, that the data are limited and come from self-reported surveys and "likely underestimate use due to social desirability bias and underreporting". "In aggregated 2002-2012 data, 14.6 percent of USA pregnant adolescents reported past-month use".

The study also reported an increase in pot usage among older pregnant women ages 25 to 34.

California was the fist state in the USA to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.

Though little clear evidence exists on the effects of marijuana on developing human fetuses, animal studies have revealed that it may disrupt brain development.

Despite the uncertainty of how the drug affects the body, California will legalize recreational marijuana for adults over the age of 21 beginning January 1.
