Family of British woman jailed in Egypt fear for her mental health

An Egyptian court on Tuesday Dec. 26, 2017, convicted British woman Laura Plummer of smuggling hundreds of powerful painkillers into the country, sentencing her to three years in prison.

Plummer, from Hull, had claimed the painkillers were for her Egyptian husband who suffers from severe back pain, the BBC reported.

Plummer's sister has said that she is on the brink of a mental breakdown.

Jayne Synclair said her sister was in court on Christmas Day but the judge adjourned the case for a day because of her condition.

Plummer claimed the painkiller was to treat her Mr Caboo's back pain and has previously said she had "no idea" the tablets were illegal. Her hair has fallen out, her teeth are discoloured, she's got a rash all over her face, and she couldn't even stand up in court.

"No prisons are nice but I think Qena's the bad one, which is terrifying for us because we fear for her so much", she said, a day after her sister's three-year sentence.

Laura Plummer, who was found with Tramadol tablets in her suitcase, has been sentenced to three years in prison.

It is legal in the United Kingdom but a banned drug in Egypt and anyone caught with it can face criminal charges. "She kept saying, "It can't be right - they've got it wrong".

Her lawyer Mohamed Othman said that "for someone to be found guilty of drug smuggling they have to be aware they are possessing narcotics".

The inmate who was tasked with looking after Laura is behind bars because she slit her best friend's throat, said the Brit's family.

Her lawyer Mohammed Osman has launched an appeal but it will not be heard for at least 60 days. There was only 320 pill found in her suitcase, therefore her lawyer has stated that it is illogical she would be trying to deal Tramadol - the plane ticket her bought was nearly twice the price of the money she would have earned if she was indeed selling the pills. "She had only 320 pills".

Plummer's local MP, Karl Turner, said her case had been raised with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt.

"This is a damning indictment actually of the Egyptian authorities in the sense that good sense and fairness certainly hasn't prevailed in this case".
