Singer Lorde cancels Israel event after backlash

Dec 27, 2017, 00:48

Lorde's cancellation was welcomed by members of the BDS movement.

Earlier this month (Dec17), the Green Light musician, real name Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, announced she would be performing in Tel Aviv, Israel next June (18).

Lorde announced the cancellation after pro-Palestinian fans in her native New Zealand criticized her.

The Israeli concert promoter responded to the cancelation: "We forgive her". Lorde joins artists including Roger Waters and Elvis Costello in boycotting Israel over its treatment of the Palestinians.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center also slammed Lorde's decision, calling it a "classic example of the world's singular obsession with one country, the State of Israel". She added that despite the research and reading she had done on the issue before initially booking, "I'm not too proud to admit I didn't make the right call on this one". "But solutions come from engagement and lead to compromise, co-operation, and peace".

"I've received an overwhelming number of messages and letters and have had a lot of discussions with people holding many views, and I think the right decision at the time is to cancel the show", the singer said in a statement as reported by reporter Amy Spiro from the Jerusalem Post.

The show's Israeli promoter, Eran Arielli, announced the cancelation on December 24 and apologized for raising the hopes of fans who wished to see the artist perform in Tel Aviv. "I have no complaints about her, and beyond that, my opinion of her has not changed one millimeter".

Meanwhile, numerous social media users called attention to the fact that Lorde's two planned concerts in Russian Federation would still go on as scheduled, accusing the singer of hypocrisy for supposedly canceling the Israel show for human rights reasons.

"If you canceled your concert in Israel, an imperfect liberal democracy, but not in Russian Federation, a ideal dictatorship that poisons its own dissidents, persecutes gays, and helped kill 500,000 Syrians, you're not being pro-human rights - you're just being anti-Israeli".

"Playing in Tel Aviv will be seen as giving support to the policies of the Israeli government, even if you make no comment on the political situation", the activists wrote.

At the time, she thanked the letter's authors for educating her on the subject and said she was speaking with "many people" to help inform her decision.
