London Zoo fire leaves staff with smoke inhalation; one aardvark missing

Firefighters from Kentish Town, Paddington, Euston, West Hampstead and other surrounding fire stations were sent to the blaze.

Misha the aardvark died in a fire that broke out at the ZSL London Zoo early Saturday morning.

An aardvark was killed and four meerkats are missing trusted dead after a burst tore through piece of London Zoo at an opportune time Saturday, wrecking a bistro and blessing shop. Four meerkats are still unaccounted for following the blaze.

However, the zoo issued a statement saying "a number of zoo staff have been treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and shock".

More details to come...

More than 70 firefighters took three hours to bring the fire under control while frantic attendants who live on the site in Regent's Park in focal London moved creatures to security.

"We had our vet team on site immediately but sadly there was nothing that they could do for Misha", he said.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the fire broke out in a cafe and shop near the Meerkat enclosure and an animal petting area.

It added: "We'd like to reassure you that the fire is now under control".

"It's too soon to speculate on the cause of the fire but we will be working very closely with fire investigators over the coming days and weeks to ascertain the cause". "Crews will remain at the scene throughout the morning damping down any remaining pockets of fire".

Zoo staff were checking the rest of the animal population and the facility remained closed to the public on what had been expected to be a busy day.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the blaze.
