The woman, who suffered 60 per cent burns, was then shifted to the hospital where she breathed her last.The police had registered a case under Indian Penal Code section 307 (attempt to murder).

A 22-year-old woman was attacked by her alleged lover who poured petrol on her and set her ablaze in Lalaguda on Thursday evening. However, Karthik was dismissed from the job recently due to inefficiency and was presently unemployed. According to workshop's proprietor, Karthik had referred Rani at his former workplace. The two knew each other as they worked in the same office till he was expelled.

At one point, shop owner Jagan Reddy had warned Karthik not to trouble Sandhya. The accused is unemployed. Police had picked up V Karthik on Thursday night from Lalaguda and questioned him throughout Friday.

Sources said that Karthik, the accused, had known the victim for a year and claimed to be in love with her. "He had been harassing her, pressing her to marry him and quit her job", DCP Sumathi told NDTV. Earlier too, he had proposed marriage to Sandhya, but she turned him down.

Police have also collected a cellphone as part of the evidence. Sandhya Rani was attacked by Sai Karthik, a school dropout who used to stalk her, when she was returning home from work. "On questioning the man told us that he set her on fire after she rejected his marriage proposal and he did not want her to accept anyone else".

The victim died at around 7.30 am while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north zone) B Sumathi said.
