South Africa's ANC Downgrades Israel Embassy Ahead of Yerushalayim Vote

Dec 22, 2017, 00:48

The proposal comes ahead of a U.N. General Assembly vote Thursday on a resolution urging President Donald Trump to rescind his decision recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The decision, which ANC made at its national conference in Johannesburg, called for the "immediate and unconditional" downgrade of the embassy to a liaison office.

"The downgrade will send a clear message to Israel that there is a price to pay for its human rights abuses and violations of worldwide law". "South Africa, with its close relationship with the Palestinians and with its experience of negotiations, has a unique position to facilitate engagements to peace", the board of deputies said.

DIRCO officials, he added, are known to hold sympathetic views towards Israel.

He added: "The World Jewish Congress stands with the South African Jewish community in opposing this decision that is brimming with double standards and risky implications".

Two members of Hamas' political bureau - Mohamed Nazzal and Maher Obeid - have been attending the ANC conference, which began on Saturday.

"A downgrade will negatively affect the South African economy by jeopardising (to name but a few) trade, tourism, access to hi tech and water technology", and also says that the move works against "social cohesion".

The Central Bank has criticised the African National Congress (ANC)'s plans to nationalise the Reserve Bank.

The ANC, Africa's oldest liberation movement, which benefited from boycotts and sanctions against Apartheid South Africa, has provided direction and we look forward to others following suit.

The ANC had taken a unanimous decision was taken to support the Palestinian cause.

"Without addressing this historic injustice, we will never have peace in the country". "We chose to remain engaged with the State of Israel, because it is often best when you want to solve problems to remain engaged, so that you can have some leverage".
