FDNY: 4 People Killed, 10 Others Hurt in Brooklyn House Fire

Aliza Azan and three of her six children died in their home in a fire possibly caused by their Chanukah menorah.

The deadly blaze erupted in the second-floor of a home at 1945 E. 14th St. near Ave S.in Sheepshead Bay around 2:30 a.m., police said.

All four victims were found on the second floor once firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The father, a 16-year-old female, and a 15-year-old male were taken to Staten Island University Hospital in critical condition while two other boys, 13- and 12-years-old, were transported to Maimonides Hospital with minor injuries, according to the Post.

Yeshiva World News reported that some of the children who were killed and injured were classmates with the seven children from the Sassoon family who were killed in a Brooklyn house fire in the Flatbush section in March 2015. "He was severely burned", Nigro said.

That fire sparked in a home along Simpson St. near Freeman St.in Foxhurst.

The investigation is ongoing. The father, 45, is a well-known member of the local Sephardic community who worked for a clothing chain in Brooklyn. After spending many years in Holon, a city south of Tel Aviv, he moved to Brooklyn in the past year.

"Tragedy strikes at this time of year, and as I've said before, this time of year makes it that much sadder", FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro explained.

The family members who perished include the mother, 40; two sons, aged 11 and 7; and a daughter, 3.
