'No decision made' on USA participation in Winter Games in South Korea

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders says the USA "looks forward to participating" in the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley told Fox News on Wednesday. "We don't ever fear anything, we live our lives", said Haley.

".And certainly that is a flawless opportunity for all of them to go and do something they have worked so hard for. What we will do is make sure we're taking every precaution possible to make sure that they're safe and to know everything that's going on around them", Haley added.

The US flew a supersonic bomber over South Korea today as part of a week-long set of military exercises meant to send a strong warning to North Korea - which has in turn carried out intercontinental ballistic missile tests.

The Pyeongchang Olympics are schedule to begin February 9, in a mountainous region located about 50 miles from the demilitarized zone between the two Korean states.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster said Saturday that the potential for war between the US and North Korea is "increasing every day".

On Wednesday, Haley told Fox News that it was an "open question" if the United States would participate in the games.

Just last week, the International Olympic Committee banned Russia's Olympic team from the games as punishment for a state-backed doping program.

"We have to watch this closely, and it's changing by the day".

Haley said the entire global community, including Russian Federation and China, has come together to issue stricter sanctions on North Korea that have cut off 90 percent of its trade and 30 percent of its oil, in an effort to reach a diplomatic solution with the government in Pyongyang.

Insight from the United States ambassador to the United Nations on 'The Story'.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the US mission to the United Nations expanded on the ambassador's remarks, saying, "The United States looks forward to participating in the Winter Olympics in South Korea next year".

Speaking in late October, USOC vice president of sport performance Kelly Skinner said, "Every Games environment brings about unique challenges, and we have some tremendous partners in the State Department that can help us prepare". This was a response to a joint military exercise between the US and South Korea involving many advanced warplanes. If hostility with the the communist nation continues at its current trend, it might not be safe to send American athletes to the region.
