Messi demands Argentina improvement ahead of World Cup

Messi retired from worldwide football after Argentina's penalties defeat to Chile in the Copa America Centenario Final previous year, before going back on his word.

Argentina, who reached the final in 2014, struggled during qualification for Russian Federation, going through three coaches before securing their place at the tournament.

'I understand Masche. The best thing is to play and enjoy yourself, and he doesn't think he'll get minutes here'.

Messi told TyC Sports: "If we do badly at the World Cup, we all have to disappear from the national team. It's going to be very hard for anyone to continue because we have already been here for a number of years".

But the 29-year-old has been in prolific form for Juventus this season, scoring nine goals in 14 Italian Serie A matches, and Messi believes his experience will be "vital" in Russian Federation.

"I never went back over the finals we lost". "I have always said that I don't consider myself to be a striker, but I have been lucky enough to always score goals and win individual prizes", he said.

"But it's true that we need to improve if we want to be world champions".

"I would have to review them to see what we did wrong so we didn't them". We deserved to win them, in spite of not playing that well.

Last Friday, Argentina, Nigeria, Iceland and Croatia were drawn together in World Cup Group D.

However, having won just four of their first eight matches under coach Jorge Sampaoli, Messi knows greater development is needed quickly if they are to challenge in Russian Federation.

"Pipa has suffered a lot from criticism and we have talked about it a lot of times", Messi said.

"Today we are some distance from being champions, but there is time for us to prepare".

"Right now we're not far off, but there are better sides than us such as Brazil, Germany, France and Spain".
