Euro 2020 : Wembley to stage 7 matches after Brussels lose hosting right

The decision means that Wembley will stage seven games in total - the final, both semi-finals, a last-16 match and three group games - resulting in the biggest festival of global football in the country since Euro 96.

And a random draw to decide which cities will host group games paired London with Glasgow, with the assurance that each team that qualifies will play at least two home matches during the pool stage.

Cardiff's Principality Stadium and Stockholm's Friends Arena - the venues for last season's finals of the Champions League and Europa League, respectively - had hoped to pick up Brussels' games.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tournament, Euro 2020 is to be played in 12 cities across Europe, with cities divided into pairs and each pair sharing matches in a particular group.

"The FAW wishes the FA and Wembley Stadium the very best for UEFA EURO 2020, which is sure to be a fantastic tournament". This is in addition to the semifinals and final, which were already set for Wembley.

Group A games will be played in Rome and Baku, while Group B games will take place in Saint Petersburg and Copenhagen. "Today we don't know if they can build a stadium or not", he told reporters at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

The decision is a blow to the Wales FA and Swedish FA, which had lobbied UEFA to take Belgium's place as a group-stage host nation.

Euro 2020 will be the first football championship in a format when group matches are spread among different countries. Wales has never staged a Euro or World Cup final and this was its one and only chance of doing so.

Koen De Brabander, chief executive of the Belgian Football Association, said in a statement that they did everything they could to make UEFA hold off.

FA chiefs were humiliated when they bid for the 2018 tournament, which was awarded to Russian Federation in same controversial ballot that saw Qatar land the 2022 event.
