Atlanta mayor's race comes down to close call

Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms emerged victorious on December 5, following a tense mayoral race that ended with a difference of just over 700 votes.

"I am just in awe of what God is able to do", Bottoms said to a crowd of her supporters on Tuesday night.

In the sequel, also co-starring Norwood, Keisha Lance Bottoms - a protege of Reed - declared herself the city's new leader early Wednesday and Norwood trailed by just 759, out of 92,169 votes cast.

"Yes we are calling it our victory lap", Bottoms told 11Alive's Morning Rush Wednesday.

Norwood has requested a recount in the latest contest because of the close margin.

A win for Bottoms would continue a run for African-American mayors that began with Maynard Jackson in the mid-1970s. Earlier this week, Tyrese shared an Instagram clip urging Atlanta voters to show their support for Bottoms on "the most important day, period" for "culture, diversity, voice, access, equal opportunities, [and] everything pertaining to what we stand for in the city of Atlanta".

Norwood will ask for a recount, but Fulton County's election director Richard Barron says the election's electronic ballots have a history of accuracy.

"It's not over yet", Norwood said.

Still, numerous city's most formidable challenges transcend race. Everyone seems to care about transportation, public safety and affordable housing. Norwood calls herself an independent and Bottoms is Reed's chosen successor.

"We're behind the times in terms of having a modern transportation system compared to what you see in NY or Washington", said Kendra A. King Momon, professor of politics at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta.

Bottoms will be the second Black woman to lead the city of Atlanta as mayor following Shirley Franklin, who served from 2002 to 2010. "She's no Johnny-come-lately". Bottoms led with 26 percent of the vote while Norwood had 21 percent. Bottoms is too close to Reed and would be like an extension of the current administration, he said.
