2 students shot near Washington high school, police say

Two students have reportedly been shot at a United States high school.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office says two students were shot at Graham-Kapowsin High School in Graham Tuesday afternoon. The male students shot were hospitalized and expected to survive.

A woman who claimed to be the mother of one of the victims wrote on Facebook that her son was shot four times and insisted that her son was not a gang member, 'but an innocent bystander along with the other boy that was shot'. But before the fight started, someone in the getaway auto fired multiple rounds, hitting the two students.

"Pretty scary. You never think it's going to happen at the school your children go to, and then you get a text from your child that says there's a shooting at the school, we're locked down", said parent Jolee Caroucher.

The shooters were suspected of fleeing the area in a green vehicle.

The Bethel School District announced that three other schools were placed on lockdown in addition to Graham-Kapowsin: Frontier Middle School, Nelson Elementary School and Graham Elementary School.

Deputies who responded to the scene checked the school's grounds and found no signs any suspects were there. Authorities believe the shooting took place off campus and students ran back to the high school after being shot at.

Investigators determined that the shooting occurred during a fight just off school grounds on Eustis-Hunt Road East.

The school district also tweeted that their thoughts and prayers are with everyone who were involved in the shooting and added they were proud of how their students and staff reacted to the incident. "All remaining students on campus are secured with deputies, considered safe as security sweep is ongoing".

Students were beginning to be released from school about 4:30 p.m., starting with Frontier Middle School, according to the Bethel School District.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is offering a reward for information in the case through Crime Stoppers.
