Qualcomm and Microsoft bring on Always Connected PCs with ASUS NovaGo
Dec 06, 2017, 00:36
HP and ASUS have reportedly worked with Microsoft very closely to make this a reality. This is a huge advantage for mobile users, who can simply add these devices to their cellular accounts and receive internet connectivity anywhere in the world, allowing them to simply turn on their device and start working instead of hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots.
It was looking like 2017 might end without any sign of these new Windows devices with Snapdragon 835 inside, despite Qualcomm earlier saying they would be available in the second half of the year.
Qualcomm partnered with ASUS and HP to have some of their new Snapdragon 835-powered laptops on display with some impressive designs on show. Meanwhile, the ASUS NovaGo weighs 1.39 kg (or 3.06 pounds) and packs a slightly larger 13.3-inch full HD LTPS touchscreen with ASUS Pen support (1024-level pressure). The company also used the opportunity to tease its latest flagship processor, the Snapdragon 845. Just that the NovaGo is running a mobile processor does not put the device into isolation.
The combination of Windows 10 and Snapdragon aims to offer various things including incredible battery life, performance and connectivity.
Being an always connected PC, the laptop comes with up to 22 hours of video playback on a single charge, and over 30 days standby. No UK prices were announced at the conference but a USA price of $599 for the model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and $799 for the model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB look very reasonable indeed. The Envy X2 is one of the first of a category of laptop to run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chip for Windows PCs. Qualcomm and Microsoft together hope that this family of thin, light, Windows 10 device will reverse those fortunes.
Long battery life isn't the only benefit of what's being called an always-connected PC.
Qualcomm promised higher battery life when it announced the endeavor to create Always On Windows devices with its Snapdragon 835 SoC, and if Asus and HP's claims are true, these devices certainly appear to deliver on that promise. This is also the first notebook that runs full Windows 10 on the ARM CPU. We'll find out the answers to those questions and more when the Envy x2 goes on sale next spring, but for now, HP gave us a few minutes of hands-on time with one so we can offer you a sneak preview of what to expect from this detachable laptop that thinks it's a smartphone.
All the promises that are made by the two tech giants are an indication of great future for innovation in the tech industry.
