Drinking, punching, shouting: Airlines dealing with rise in extreme air rage

To continue to deliver on our full potential, governments need to raise their game-implementing global standards on security, finding a reasonable level of taxation, delivering smarter regulation and building the cost-efficient infrastructure to accommodate growing demand.

IATA noted that labour costs are now a larger expense item than fuel, comprising 30.9% of costs in 2018.

"Despite the challenges, there is positive momentum heading into 2018".

North American airlines are once again primed to record the highest profits in the industry.

This was contained in IATA's latest analysis of demand for passenger air transport. Outbound global traffic continues to uphold growth movement in the sector, but inbound traffic to North America is reportedly being deterred by additional security measures inherent with traveling to the US, IATA noted.

In the Asia-Pacific region, including India, airlines are expected to register profits of $9 billion in 2018, which would be marginally higher than $8.3 billion projected for this year.

"Overall unit costs are expected to grow by 4.3 per cent in 2018 [a significant acceleration on the 1.7 per cent increase in 2017]". Capacity climbed 9.1%, and load factor slipped 0.3 percentage points to 82.6%.

In 2017, IATA said airlines hit a new record of over 20,000 city-pair connections, up by 1,351 from 2016. Worldwide traffic for North American carriers grew 3.7% during the month (compared to 3% in September) as global capacity in the region grew 5.2%, causing the region's global load factor to slide 1.1 points YOY to 79.2%.

"Cargo yields are expected to improve by 4% in 2018 (down from the 5% in 2017)".

The figures accounts for 190 of the world's airlines so "are likely to significantly underestimate the extent of the problem", IATA's assistant director for external affairs Tim Colehan said in Geneva. "This will outpace an expected 3.5 per cent increase in unit revenues", Pearce said. "Next year, we are expecting Brent crude to be around US$60 and jet fuel to be around US$74 a barrel".

Over the past year, IATA statistics showed that airlines in India recorded an increase in passenger traffic of just over twenty percent.

Global trade has also helped cargo operators, with an estimated 62.5 million tons of freight to be carried in 2018, constituting an increase of 4.5 percent from the 2017 forecast. As a result, net margin will edge up from 4.6 per cent in 2017 to 4.7 per cent in 2018 despite operating margins being squeezed by increasing costs.
