25th anniversary of the world's 1st text message

It was a two word message: Merry Christmas. Feeling old? Yeah, join the club.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority's consumer survey showed 22 billion texts are sent worldwide every day.

"I don't know if they really thought it was going to be a big thing", he said.

December 3 marks the 25th birthday of SMS, or more popularly known as text messages, which helped shape mobile phone technology and communication standards.

The first SMS messages had a 160-character limit, forcing early texters to get creative by using so-called "txt spk" abbreviations and emoticon symbols, the forebears of modern emojis.

Apps like Facebook Messengers, WhatsApp and iMessage have limited the range of the regular SMS. If ever there was a sign Tomorrow's World was not just a litany of disappointment, that was it.

Back then it was called an SMS, or short message service.

Australians send an average of 85 million texts a day and more than 80 percent of Australian adults said they'd sent a text in the last six months.

With 25 years under its belt, many people may be wondering if the end of the line is near for SMS.

London's Science Museum says the SMS marked a turning point in the history of phones and communications.

A British engineer, Neil Papworth sent the first text message using his PC to a senior executive of his telecom company Vodafone, who was attending a holiday party in Newbury, England.

And we can see that continuation through to today when we have hundreds of thousands of applications on our smartphone. Overall, some 8 trillion (yes, TRILLION!) texts are sent each year, which again does not include app-to-app messages.

Seven years after Papworth's first SMS message in 1999, texts could finally be exchanged on multiple networks, propelling them into greater popularity.

Text messages have also deeply changed social norms of interaction.
