Jimbo Fisher resigns at Florida State

After eight seasons and one national championship, Jimbo Fisher is reportedly leaving Florida State to become the new head football coach at Texas A&M.

The Seminoles beat Louisiana-Monroe 42-10 Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.

The Seminoles (5-6) need a win Saturday to become bowl eligible for a 36th consecutive season. His annual salary at FSU placed him near the top of all college football coaches, and his hiring is a clear sign that Texas A&M won't settle for being a second-tier school in the conference.

FSU student Ben James said, "It's a huge loss for the Florida State community, it's a huge loss for the football community, especially for the die-hard Florida State Fans". He succeeded Bobby Bowden in 2010.

"I'm disappointed to see him leave, but at the same time I don't really hate him for it because of what he's done for us and I think, you know, he should be free to go wherever he wants", said Dino Hernandez. I've known him forever, when I was at Alabama and he was at Auburn. The excitement around Florida State is indisputable, and a tremendous opportunity awaits whoever is chosen as our new head football coach.

In the interim, I have appointed associate head coach and defensive tackles coach Odell Haggins to serve as our head coach versus ULM.

President Thrasher and I have worked together through this challenging period while Coach Fisher was making a decision, and I appreciate the cooperation, support and leadership he has provided. I am confident we will fill the position very soon. They'll hire a great coach. We play Texas A&M the next two years. I don't have any doubt about that. If he is [going to the Aggies], I can't get rid of him. The top name so far has been first-year OR coach Willie Taggart, who took over at OR last offseason after turning around the South Florida program.

Per a person in Fisher's final meeting with his players, the former head coach apologized for misleading his team. The school's only national title came in 1939.
