Israel Targets Iranian Military Base SW of Damascus

At least two Israeli missiles have been intercepted outside the Syrian capital, state media said on Saturday, although some military targets suffered damage from the strikes.

The Syrian army's air defense at 12:30 AM Saturday, confronted an Israeli missile attack on one of the military sites in Damascus countryside, SANA reported Saturday morning.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on reports of the attack. Foreign media reports state the location of the targeted base is Al-Kiswa, about 13 kilometers south of Damascus.

Hizballah fought a war with Israel in 2006. Like other recent strikes inside Syria, the Israeli jets reportedly fired from over Lebanese airspace, in order to avoid both Syrian anti-aircraft missile systems and provoking a Russian response. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has been warning since last summer that it will prevent Iran and its allies from having military bases near its territory. Satellite images showed construction at the alleged base.

Iran has provided critical support to President Bashar al-Assad's military in fighting Syrian rebels and Islamic State militants. With several hundred Revolutionary Guards and dozens of field instructors, he directs a multinational force comprising 7,000 Hezbollah fighters and several thousands of Shi'a combatants. Iran-backed Shi'ite militias, including Hezbollah, have helped Damascus regain control of swathes of the country.
