Theresa May publicly condemns Trump for retweeting videos from 'hateful' Britain First

"On the issue of radical Islamism, British Muslims are peaceful and law-abiding who have themselves been victims of acts of terror by the far right".

As far back as January, an online petition calling for Trump to be prevented from making an official state visit had shot past 1-million signatures.

Jayda Fransen, a leader of the Britain First Party, originally posted the videos.

A British politician says President Trump should be arrested if he visits the United Kingdom, ramping up criticism one day after Trump retweeted anti-Muslim videos from a British ultranationalist group.

Speaking to reporters during a trip to Jordan, the prime minister stood her ground, defending her record on tackling extremism - including by the far-right while emphasising the strength of British-US ties. "I'm unclear what his beef is with me", the mayor has said while also being clear that he has better things to do than engage in a war of words with the president.

It began after the terrorist attacks on London Bridge when Trump criticised Khan's response: "Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his "no reason to be alarmed" statement", the president tweeted. Labour's Naz Shah accused him of promoting "the hate-filled ideology of fascism".

Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, appeared sympathetic to a call from an MP for Mr Trump to delete his twitter account, telling MPs: "I'm sure many of us might share his view".

Britain First, a small group with no political representation and best known for aggressive picketing outside mosques, has hailed Trump for his support.

But the prime minister's bid to nurture a close relationship with the unpredictable president has not gone according to plan.

In evidence of alarm over the episode, Britain's ambassador to the US, Sir Kim Darroch, disclosed he had raised the government's concerns over Mr Trump's retweets with the White House.

Within hours of May's departure, Trump signed an order banning travel to the USA from several majority-Muslim countries.

"Trump, however, is testing it in ways we've not seen before".

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry said Mr Trump's tweets were created to "humiliate and belittle" the Prime Minister and had put the Queen in a "very hard and invidious position" as his host for the visit.

"We ought to be holding him at arm's length", Thornberry told Sky News.

"An invitation for a state visit has been extended and has been accepted", she said.
