Ex-Trump campaign aide Manafort in US$11.65m bail deal

President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman reached an $11 million bail agreement with prosecutors Thursday that would end the house arrest he has lived under for the past month, according to court documents.

He could travel to Florida, New York, Virginia and Washington, D.C., but would need prior court approval to travel elsewhere inside the United States.

Paul Manafort has reached a $11 million bail agreement with special counsel Robert Mueller's office that would allow him to be released from home arrest and Global Positioning System monitoring, according to court documents filed on Thursday.

The agreement, which still needs a judge's approval, would also allow Manafort to shed a Global Positioning System tracking device, USA Today reported.

Worldwide travel would not be allowed under the terms of his release.

"Although for some this might not seem consequential, it must be remembered that Mr. Manafort has been an global political consultant for many years", wrote his attorney, Kevin Downing.

Manafort would have to forfeit all four properties if he violates the terms of his bail.

The deal involves a promise from Manafort to give up $11.65 million worth of real estate - including homes in Bridgehampton, N.Y., and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. - if he violates the conditions of his release, USA Today reported.

Notably not on the list is a property on East 5th Avenue in Manhattan - identified by several media outlets as being in Trump Tower - that Manafort previously said in court papers he was willing to post in exchange for his release from home confinement.

The charges filed against Mr. Manafort and Mr. Gates were not connected to their work for the Trump campaign, rather the charges stemmed from their failure to report years of lobbying activity done on behalf of a Ukrainian political party and the laundering of money received for the work.

The charges are part of Mueller's investigation into the conclusions of USA intelligence agencies that Russian Federation undertook a campaign of hacking and misinformation to tilt the election in Trump's favour and potential collusion by Trump associates, allegations that Moscow and the president deny.

The new deal must now be approved by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson.
