Beavers to name Jonathan Smith new head coach

A person with direct knowledge of the decision says Oregon State has hired Washington co-offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith to be its new head coach.

Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin was reportedly going to be the next head coach, but no official word came from the university. Prior to that, he was quarterbacks coach under Petersen at Boise State for two seasons (2012-13).

The 38-year-old Smith, a Southern California native, was a four-year starter at quarterback for the Beavers and led them to a top-five finish in 2000 under Dennis Erickson and was the Fiesta Bowl MVP. The Beavers went 1-11 this season, ending their year with a 69-10 loss in the Civil War against OR on Saturday.

After graduating, Smith became a graduate assistant at his alma mater before moving to Idaho, where he was the quarterbacks coach for six seasons. Tennessee is embroiled in craziness, Oregon and Florida State could be tied together in weird fashion and, well, Oregon State has to hire a new leader at the top of the program.
