Alfa Romeo back in F1 with Sauber after more than 30 years

The Alfa Romeo name will return to Formula 1 in 2018, with the Sauber F1 team having secured a title-sponsorship deal with the manufacturer.

Sauber chairman Pascal Picci said: "Alfa Romeo has a long history of success in Grand Prix racing, and we are very proud that this internationally renowned company has chosen to work with us for its return to the pinnacle of motorsport". They took a podium lock-out in the very first GP, at Silverstone, and had at least two cars on the podium in five of the six races.

Not only that, but it backed up that championship with Giuseppe Farina by winning the 1951 title with the legendary Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio.

First and foremost, Alfa Romeo won the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship in 1950.

Sauber Holding chairman Pascal Picci explained that "working closely with a vehicle manufacturer is a great opportunity for the Sauber Group to further develop its technology and engineering projects". The brand itself will also benefit from the sharing of technology and strategic know-how with a partner of the Sauber F1 Team's undisputed experience. But it changes next year with the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team.

The 2018 Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 cars will wear Alfa Romeo colors and will use 2018 Ferrari power units, a deal already inked between Sauber and Ferrari in July, 2017.

"Working closely with a vehicle manufacturer is a great opportunity for the Sauber Group to further develop its technology and engineering projects". It's the first time the company has been involved with the sport since 1979, when it pulled out at the end of its chain of engine supply deals that started in 1961.

Carlos Pace drives the #8 Martini Racing Brabham Alfa Romeo BT45 during the Grand Prix of Monaco on 30 May 1976 on the streets of Monaco.

After its early success the company competed on and off, but finally withdrew as a constructor in 1985.

In 1970 Peter Sauber founded his company and designed his first racing auto in the cellar of his parents' house.

Don't forget the Haas team already operates in a similar capacity, using Ferrari's wind tunnel and giving Ferrari more data to analyse in its efforts to make its race vehicle ever faster. Leclerc has been mentioned as a potential successor for Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari, but the team has always been reluctant to run rookie drivers.
