Jimmy Garoppolo To Make First Start For 49ers On Sunday

The 49ers on Tuesday announced that recently acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will make his first start with San Francisco Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

The 49ers traded for Garoppolo to become the franchise quarterback.

Garoppolo entered the game with just 1:07 remaining, but had enough time to throw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy in the 24-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. After sitting for two games and almost all of a third, Tom Brady's ex-backup briefly entered the 49ers' loss to the Seahawks on Sunday, throwing a touchdown pass to Louis Murphy as time expired. Beathard threw three touchdown passes compared to five interceptions in his five starts, during which the Niners went 1-4.

"He's gotten better", Shanahan said.

Beathard was injured in Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, which pressed Garoppolo into brief duty. He most notably threw 42-for-59 (71.2 percent) for 496 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions in two starts during the 2016 season, posting a 119 passer rating. He backed up Tom Brady in New England before getting traded to San Francisco.

Beathard left the game Sunday with a knee contusion and a hip strain. It is unclear whether Beathard's injuries had anything to do with Shanahan's decision.

Shanahan said Monday he wanted his starting quarterback to take all the necessary reps in practice to prepare for Sunday and there questions as to Beathard's availability for Wednesday's practice.

"When you're making a long-term decision on someone for your organization, for you to pay him the amount of money that you do for quarterbacks, that's a big deal", Shanahan said.
