Gunfire at NY mall leaves 2 injured, officials say

Two people were reportedly injured in a Middletown mall Sunday afternoon, a New York State Police spokesperson said.

Two individuals were injured, as indicated by News 12 Westchester, yet the degree of their wounds was not promptly clear.

No information was immediately available on the victims.

Police responded to reports of gunfire around 3 p.m.(2000 GMT) and the entire mall was on lockdown by 5 p.m. (2200 GMT) Sunday. Both victims are expected to be OK.

"That is yet to be determined, the intent of letting the round go", said Chief Robert Hertman of the Town of Wallkill Police Department.

According to police, it's unclear at this time if the gun was intentionally fired.

Witness Leighton Peterson tells The Associated Press he was grabbing a bite to eat in the mall's food court when he heard alarms and employees telling everybody to get to the exits.

The AP reports that The Galleria was evacuated in December 2008 when an odor of gas forced the shopping center to close early during the holiday shopping rush.
